The 2026-27 Premier League season kicked off on Friday, August 21, when Arsenal hosted newly promoted Coventry City under the lights. Between now and May, 20 clubs will play 380 matches to settle a title race that looks tighter at the top than it has in years — and a relegation scrap that could swallow any of five clubs.

The Title Race: Arsenal's To Lose
Our prediction: Arsenal. The numbers say this is the deepest squad in the league, and the eye test agrees. Viktor Gyökeres has settled into the No. 9 role the club spent half a decade trying to fill, Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi form the league's most complete double pivot, and Eberechi Eze's arrival gives Mikel Arteta a genuine creator off the left to pair with Bukayo Saka's production on the right. The William Saliba–Gabriel partnership remains the standard.
Manchester City are the obvious counter-argument. Erling Haaland is still the most reliable goal machine in world football, and any side with Rodri walks into the conversation. The question is legs in midfield across 38 games plus Europe.
Correction, September 12, 2026: this preview originally said Jack Grealish was returning to Manchester City from his loan at Everton, and listed that move below as one of five transfers that change things. He did not return: he is registered with Everton for 2026-27. The rest of the preview is unchanged from August 3.
Liverpool complete the top tier. Mohamed Salah's numbers refuse to decline, and the spine is settled — but the squad's rating gap to Arsenal is real, and it showed late last season.
Top Four: Two Spots, Four Claimants
Behind the big three, the numbers give Manchester United fourth — but only just. United's squad rates a point and a half above Tottenham's, and new signings have finally addressed the midfield. Spurs' case rests on Conor Gallagher's arrival adding the bite they've lacked, while Chelsea remain the league's great variance machine: on paper a top-four squad, in practice a coin flip. Aston Villa, quietly strengthened by Alejandro Garnacho on loan, are the value pick to crash the party.

The Relegation Scrap
The promoted trio — Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City — arrive with the three weakest squads in the division, and the gap to 17th is wider than usual. History says at least one promoted side survives most seasons; the squads say this could be the year all three go straight back down. Ipswich look best equipped to break the pattern: Daizen Maeda's arrival from Celtic gives them genuine Premier League pace, and Kjell Scherpen is an upgrade in goal.
Of the established clubs, Leeds (17th in our ratings) have the thinnest squad, and Brentford's sales have left them lighter than their mid-table finish suggests. Sunderland spent well and should be clear.
Our bottom three: Coventry, Hull, Ipswich — with Leeds sweating until April.
Five Transfers That Change Things
Jack Grealish → Manchester City (loan return)— corrected: he stayed at Everton; see the note above.- Alejandro Garnacho → Aston Villa (loan from Chelsea) — the obligation-to-buy clause means Villa are auditioning a long-term winger, and he's exactly their profile.
- Conor Gallagher → Tottenham — the ball-winning engine Spurs' midfield has begged for since Mousa Dembélé left.
- Daizen Maeda → Ipswich — the single most important signing of the promoted clubs' summer. Relentless pressing, real end product.
- Xaver Schlager → Nottingham Forest — an elite-level No. 6 for a side that finished last season believing it belongs in Europe.

- Golden Boot: Erling Haaland. Boring, correct. Gyökeres is the interesting alternative in a better attacking system.
- Player of the Season: Bukayo Saka. If Arsenal win it, he'll be the reason more games than anyone else.
- Golden Glove: David Raya. Best defence, most clean sheets — the maths does itself.
- Young Player: Ethan Nwaneri. Set for a genuine breakout season with Eze drawing markers away.
