Gameweek 4 belonged to the away sides. Five of the ten matches were away wins and only one home team won all round: Leeds, who beat Newcastle 4–1 on Monday and climbed from ninth to third. Arsenal (2–0 at Sunderland) and Manchester City (1–0 at Manchester United) were two of the five, both still perfect after four games, and Arsenal went top on goal difference. The other four matches were drawn, two of them goalless, and 29 goals were scored, up from 23 a week earlier. Brighton’s 5–0 at Coventry built the spine of it: Dunk, De Cuyper and Groß all made the eleven, Kostoulas made the bench, and their manager is Manager of the Week. Promoted Ipswich supplied two more, Davis and Emersonn, from a 3–2 win at Crystal Palace. The two clubs level at the top barely feature. Raya, after a clean sheet at Sunderland, is Arsenal’s only player in it, and Manchester City have nobody: Gvardiol, who set up the only goal at Manchester United, is on the bench. Bogle is the one player to make both the Gameweek 3 and the Gameweek 4 elevens, and he scored in both rounds.

Groß had a hand in three of Brighton’s five goals at Coventry — one scored, two set up — and his 17 points came from that goal, those two assists, three bonus points and a clean sheet over the full 90 minutes. The spread of the win matters as much as the margin. Five different Brighton players scored (Dunk, Groß, Ayari, Kostoulas and Yalcouyé), and with nothing conceded the points reached the back line too: Dunk and De Cuyper both made the eleven. The result took Brighton from tenth to fifth and to 13 goals for the season, the most in the league. It says as much about Coventry: the promoted side have lost all four of their games, conceded ten and not scored.

Arsenal and Manchester City are the only clubs with four wins from four, level on 12 points, with Arsenal ahead on goal difference after conceding once all season. Leeds and Hull, both unbeaten, are four points behind them in third and fourth. Hull were the only side yet to concede going into this round; they let in two at Chelsea and still left with a point, both of their goals from Belloumi. The best goal difference in the league belongs to neither leader: Brighton’s +8 is one better than Arsenal’s, from a side in fifth that has already lost a game. At the bottom, Coventry have neither a goal nor a point and Tottenham have still not scored, while Aston Villa finally did, through Alysson, and lost 2–1 at home to Nottingham Forest anyway; they are 19th. Newcastle fell furthest, down to twelfth after the defeat at Leeds. Four rounds in, the gap that means something is the one at the top: two clubs have taken every point available, and nobody else has more than eight.
