Premier League Gameweek 5 Review: Every Result & Team of the Week

Gameweek 5 left one perfect record standing. Manchester City beat Sunderland 5–3 for a fifth win from five and are three points clear at the top, because Arsenal lost for the first time: 3–0 at Brighton, who kept a clean sheet and climbed to third. Further down, two goalless starts ended. Coventry scored their first at Nottingham Forest and it won the game 1–0, their first points of the campaign; Tottenham scored their first two, at home to Aston Villa, and still lost 3–2, which gave Villa their first win and left Spurs bottom. Home sides won five of the ten and 27 goals were scored. We did not publish scoreline predictions for this round, so there is no scorecard this week.

The Team of the Week

The highest-scoring eleven of Gameweek 5 by FPL points, in a 4-4-2. Player of the Week: Semenyo (Man City, 17 points). Manager of the Week: Frank Lampard (Coventry City). How the XI is picked.

Coventry, who started the round bottom without a goal or a point, supply the goalkeeper, a defender and the Manager of the Week. Dasilva scored the only goal at Forest, and Rushworth, who kept the clean sheet, is credited by FPL with the assist for it. Aston Villa’s win at Tottenham put Manzambi and Buendía in midfield, and Brighton’s 3–0 against Arsenal gave Groß his second straight place in the eleven, with Kostoulas up front a week after making the bench. The two clubs at the top have one player between them: Semenyo, Player of the Week on 17 points from two goals and an assist. Brobbey matched his 17 from the side that lost that game.

The standout performers

By FPL points, the players who did most in Gameweek 5:

  • Brobbey (FWD, SUN) — 17 points, 3 goals, 3 bonus
  • Semenyo (MID, MCI) — 17 points, 2 goals, 1 assist, 2 bonus
  • Dasilva (DEF, COV) — 15 points, 1 goal, 3 bonus
  • Groß (MID, BHA) — 14 points, 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 bonus
  • Schuster (DEF, BRE) — 14 points, 1 assist, 3 bonus
  • Tarkowski (DEF, EVE) — 14 points, 1 assist, 3 bonus

Brobbey scored a hat-trick away at Manchester City and lost. His 17 points — three goals and three bonus points over the full 90 minutes — are the joint-highest of the round, and Sunderland’s three goals were more than City had conceded in their first four games put together, which was two. City scored five anyway: Semenyo twice, Enzo, Cherki and Haaland, with four different players credited with the assists. The game says something about both sides. City have now let in five in five matches, but nobody has found a way to stop them scoring. Sunderland have lost two in a row and are 14th.

The table after Gameweek 5

Man City lead on 15 points, with Arsenal 2nd.

Manchester City lead on 15 points, three clear of Arsenal, with Brighton third on 10. Below them it is crowded: Brentford, Leeds, Liverpool and Everton are all on nine and all still unbeaten, with two wins and three draws each. Hull lost their unbeaten record at Newcastle and fell from fourth to eighth, and Chelsea slipped from sixth to tenth after the 3–0 defeat at Brentford. Brighton’s 16 goals are the most in the league, three more than City, and their goal difference of +11 is the best. At the bottom, Coventry’s win took them off the foot of the table to 18th and Aston Villa rose from 19th to 16th. Tottenham are 20th on two points, behind Fulham on goal difference, and neither has won a game. Five rounds in, one side has not dropped a point and four more have not lost one.
