Premier League Gameweek 8 Review: Every Result & Team of the Week

Gameweek 8 ended the season’s last perfect record. Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2–1, both Villa goals from N.Jackson, and Arsenal’s 2–0 against Everton took them level with City on 21 points; City stay top on goal difference. That leaves no unbeaten club in the league. It was also the lowest-scoring round of the season so far, 19 goals in ten matches, with three home wins and three draws. Tottenham won 2–0 at Chelsea, who had Palmer sent off, and Bournemouth won 3–0 at Manchester United. We did not publish scoreline predictions for this round, so there is no scorecard this week.

Every result

The Team of the Week

The highest-scoring eleven of Gameweek 8 by FPL points, in a 4-5-1. Player of the Week: Gabriel (Arsenal, 17 points). Manager of the Week: Mikel Arteta (Arsenal). How the XI is picked.

Arsenal’s two goals against Everton both came from defenders, who also kept the clean sheet, so Gabriel, the Player of the Week on 17, and Konsa are both in it and Arteta is Manager of the Week. Bournemouth’s win at Old Trafford gives them three: Hill at the back, and Rayan and Tavernier, who both scored, in midfield. Trafford is in goal after a goalless draw at Sunderland. The side that ended City’s run is in it once, through N.Jackson, the only forward in a 4-5-1, and City have nobody in it for the first time since Gameweek 4.

The standout performers

By FPL points, the players who did most in Gameweek 8:

  • Gabriel (DEF, ARS) — 17 points, 1 goal, 3 bonus
  • Konsa (DEF, ARS) — 14 points, 1 goal, 2 bonus
  • N.Jackson (FWD, AVL) — 13 points, 2 goals, 3 bonus
  • Bobb (MID, FUL) — 11 points, 1 goal, 3 bonus
  • Tel (MID, TOT) — 11 points, 1 goal, 3 bonus
  • Dedić (DEF, NEW) — 11 points, 1 assist, 2 bonus

N.Jackson’s two goals were the difference between an eighth straight City win and a first defeat. He scored both in 81 minutes for 13 points with three bonus, McGinn and Mbaye providing the assists, and at the other end Suzuki made six saves, the most by any goalkeeper in the round. It is Villa’s third win in four games and it lifts them to ninth; four rounds ago they were 19th and had not won.

The table after Gameweek 8
